I keep getting a error report when I am on the internet.
It says something about a generic Win32 services has
encountered a problem and has to shut down. Then it
sends an error report to Microsoft and shuts down. I
can't even download updates. Does anyone know what is
going on?

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Sounds like a windows socket error of the files related
to connecting to the internet. I would recommend copying
relevant data files and documents off of your hard drive
onto removable media at once. It is possible, however
unlikely, that a computer virus may have burdened these
files. I would also recommend acquiring Norton Internet
Security 2004 if you don't have it already and upgrading
to Windows XP if you haven't. Then format your hard
drive in NTSF format and before reinstalling all of your
software and your data and documents install the Norton
Internet Security 2004 which includes Norton Antivirus
2004 and do a full scan after doing live update until it
says there are no more updates. By the way, when you do
live update, select manual mode not automatic, and select
the common client updates alone first until there's none
of them left because otherwise it buggers up the whole
liveupdate process and don't ask me why.

Alternative: Ask Microsoft for customer service or
hopefully someone else here might have a solution. But
it has been my experience Microsoft asks me to pay for
technical support and I wish they would let us have e-
mail reminders of responses to our questions here and
hide our e-mails because the last time I posted my e-mail
my e-mail address was useless for months on end with
spamm full of fake e-mails from Microsoft with updates
and attachments like ten a day of like 10 MB of files a
day. It was incredible. It just seems to me folks
should get Macintoshs'. Hrmph.

You could post a copy of the Error Report!

You can always look at these in Event Viewer. Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.
