Error reading AVI files

Guest

My DVD drive plays regular DVDs and both audio and file CDs but when I
attempt to play a DVD with AVI files on it, it gives me the following error
message:

Windows cannot read from this disk. This disk might be corrupted, or it
could be using a format that is not comaptible with windows.

I've tried downloading updated codecs and new versions of media players, but
I'm not sure if I have the right ones. The computer recognizes the files
when presented on a flash drive, but then windows media player gives me the
message that it has trouble downloading the proper codecs.

I have an IBM thinkpad and am using XP professional. Any help would truly
be appreciated.

Download and install G-Spot Codec Identifier....

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Open G-Spot and point it towards one of the problem files.... click on
Render at the bottom and it will look at the file and tell you exactly what
codec it needs. Remember that codec packs are, usually, a really bad idea.
The only two codecs I've ever needed are the DiVX and the xVid codecs and
they are available at the websites www.divx.com and www.xvid.com Multiple
versions of other codecs are more likely only to cause problems on your PC,
not resolve your problem.
