Error opening word file

My son was working on a massive school project, the computer froze and when
he rebooted, he could not open the document (no, of course he hadn't backed
it up), getting this message:

word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these sugestions.
*check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space
*open the file with the File Recovery converter

We have tried all these suggetions, tried renaming the document, tried
e-mailing it to another computer. No luck. He can open other doucments. I'm
assuming the document is corrupted. Can we recover any of it and if so, how?
We have XP and Word 2003. Help, it is due soon!

Did you clear your TEMP folder and remove all crashed temp files of
the doc?
