Error occurred while checking spelling

Hi,

I'm composing e-mails with HTML format without the Word as the editor,
So I'm using the build-in Outlook spell checker.
Few days ago, the spell checker fails to start whenever I press on the F7
key with the error:
"Error occurred while checking spelling"

I tried to restart the Outlook. The whole PC, by nothing helps.

Can anybody help me fixing it.

You didn't mention what version of Outlook you are using, but the later
versions of Office/Outlook offer a detect and repair feature. This can be
found under the Help menu in the program or by going thru Add/Remove
programs applet in the control panel.

If you tried this, please post back with the version of Office/Outlook you
are using. You can get the version of Outlook by starting the program and
selecting Help > About Microsoft Outlook. We just need the number in the
parens + SP#.

I'm using Outlook 2003 (11.8169.8172) SP3.

I managed to fix the problem.
The problem was in the CUSTOM.DIC file. It was messed up. Instead of one
word per line, after a few lines all words where joined to a one long line.
So I deleted this long line, and all is well now.

But I did find something that may cause problems.
In the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\Proofing Tools\Spelling all paths point to an invalid path on the
network. it points to files ...\Proof\MSSP2_EN.LEX and ...\Proof\Mssp232.dll
It should point into my local disk, but I don't where too.

Do you know where should it point to?

Hmm... I'm running Windows XP (SP2)/Office 2003 (SP3) and the registry path
mentioned doesn't exist on my pc. Are you running this operating system or
something else? Other thought that comes to mind is an earlier version of
Office (e.g. Office 97) or Works components are/was installed.

No, it's WinXP Pro with Office 2003 Pro.
I don't remember having any earlier office version on this PC.

I don't have these and yes, it looks like the network gods did have earlier
versions of Office components installed judging by the "MSAPPS.97" folder
name. (Or at the very least, an image of the computer system that has been
revised over the years that still includes this reference.)
