Here is the first step to get you going again. Make yourself
a Win2000 boot disk like so:
- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD
to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

Report what you get out of this.

Try this:

Boot to repair again, but this time choose "Manual" then
select "Verify Windows System Files". See this article for
more details:
Differences Between Manual and Fast Repair in Windows

Thanks, I will try this. I tried this last night "BUT" I
was tired not thinking sharp thats is not time to mess
with the computer. I do believe I tried the manual
selection, the results did not fix the ntldr problem. I
will study the procedure and get back the results,Rob

Hello, Thanks for help I made a boot disk as you suggested
from my machine at work and put in all the files. I booted
the work machine with it and it worked. It booted with
disk and gave a win2000 selection timed out and went into
logo and boot. I will try at home tonight.

I would assume that I have a corrupt or missing ntldr or
ntdetect.com would I have to copy the files if this works
to the root?

Time to do some fact-finding. Boot your machine with a Win98
boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, then run this command:

ntfsdos /L:E

You can get ntfsdos.exe from www.sysinternals.com.

Now have a look at drive E: and check if your files and
folders are still there, especially "E:\win2000\system32\ntoskrnl.exe",
then report back here.

I loaded the ntfsdos.exe but relised it was set up with
fat32, so after it stated there was no ntfs partitions I
used the 98 boot disk and just changed to the c: drive did
a dir and there is only three directorys created on 12-14-
03 (Bootex),(Found000), and(Found)
These might have been created the time I did a erd repair
attempt, or it might have been the time it went south. In
any case there is no files or directorys to be seen.
I was wondering as to what might have happened ?

At this point it seems a complete install is in order, but
before I do anything I will digest this problem and hope
you can help me Mind Smith this as to what might have
occured.
Many thanks for help Rob

I don't know what happened to your machine, and
when, but it seems obvious that your system got
totally hosed at some stage. This is why I suggested
to have a look at what's still there, before trying any
repairs.

Since you now have the opportunity to start afresh,
you might consider adopting my preferred way of
setting up a machine. I freely admit that this is a
personal preference; many people will disagree with
me.

1. Split the disk into 2 partitions: 2 to 4 GBytes for
Win2000 & apps, the rest for data.
2. Load Win2000.
3. Get everything just right.
4. Use DriveImage or Ghost to take a snapshot
of your installation.
5. Store your snapshot elsewhere.
6. Renew your snapshot every 6 months.
7. Keep the two most recent copies of your
snapshot.

This approach makes it a child's play back up your
data, and to restore your system after a disaster.
