i have windows xp home with sp2, i have windows defender, ad-aware, spybot sd
and norton IS 2006. when i shut my system down i get the following error
message: the instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
the memory could not be "read"
when i restart my system i recieve the following error message: generic host
process for win 32 services encountered a problem and needed to close.
i don't understand either message and therefore don't know how to correct
them. i am a relative novice (computer stupid) so please be gentle with me.
kind regards.

This may or may not be the culprit...but you're running way too many active
scanning programs. You should never run more than 1 anti-malware product at
the same time. Windows Defender always runs in the background; and AdAware
and Spybot can be configured to do the same. This can cause serious
conflicts. Same thing with installing both McAfee and Norton Antivirus on
the same computer. Bad news.

I'm getting the same error too. I think it might have something to do with a
recently installed Microsoft update, but I don't know. Along with that, my
iTunes isn't playing music files and I can't hear audio through Internet
Explorer. I'm running windows defender, ad-aware, and McAffee. For me, the
sys error comes after I've rebooted the computer along with the Generic
Server error.

Go here to end all your worries....it works......

"I just resolved my issue by turning off automatic updates, reboot, then
manually going to windows updates and installing the updates, turing on
automatic updates, reboot."
I wonder why Microsoft dosn't know this ?

It seems that code has to do with some sort of Pentium program error
detection. I would assume that my machine failed to autoinstall an update
and this error was the result...please try and I hope this helps you out.

Did you get this fixed?

I had exactly the same problem, which started after a reload on Windows
Update.
The effect was to stop the sound.

I went through a long process of preventing processes and services on
start-up.

It turned out to be the Windows auto update service causing the error.

Stopped that - all OK.

I guess I need to reload it now, but haven't backed everythin up yet and I
want to do that :-{
