Error messages after installing .Net Framework 1.1

Hi all

After installing .Net Framework 1.1 and its Service Pack 1from Windows
Updates this morning, I found some errors in the Application section of
Event Viewer.

I can't find much information about them and what little I found I
didn't really understand. Could someone please tell me if I need to do
anything? They are:

Event Source: ASP.NET 1.1.4322.0
Event Category: Setup
Event ID:1020
Date: 13/07/2005

Description:
Updates to the IIS metabase were aborted because IIS is either not
installed or is disabled on this machine. To configure ASP.NET to run in
IIS, please install or enable IIS and re-register ASP.NET using
aspnet_regiis.exe /i.

I had no idea what IIS was and whether I ought to have it, so I followed
the link. This led to a "Sorry, no further information" message. I
searched the Knowledge Base and found KB 555150, "How to add support for
ASP.NET in Internet Information Services 5 and 5.1".

This then pointed me to KB 308192, "How to configure Windows 2000 as a
Web server". Agh! I don't really want to do that -- this is a standalone
home PC. Do I have to do this if I have .NET Framework installed?

I followed the link, which says there is an issue with .NET Framework
performance counters and referred me to KB 307515, "FIX: Custom
performance counters do not publish performance data to WMI". This says
to obtain the hotfix in KB 824336 and run a lot of frightening-looking
C# code, which I have no idea how to do.

On to look at KB 824336, which says: "If you are not severely affected
by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework
1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix." The last review date of the
article was August 31 2004, so wouldn't the version I downloaded today
have incorporated this fix?

I am now totally confused. Could any kind person please let me know
what, if anything, I need to do to sort out these problems? And is this
normal after installing .NET Framework, or do I just have a
weirdly-configured computer?

Hi,

A) Are you actually experiencing any "real" problems? If not, then ignore
the messages.

B) Are you using IIS (allows you to create a web server)? If not, then
ignore the messages.

C) Why did you install the .net framework? Most users do not need this.

No, no problems as far as I'm aware.

No, I don't want to run a web server.

I thought I would be likely to need it relatively soon after reading Ken
Blake's reply here to someone on July 9:

You need it if you run programs that use it. You may not run any
such programs right now, but you likely will in the near future.
I didn't run any a couple of months ago, but today I have two.

And also Windows Update presented it as a necessary update, not an
optional one. I suppose I wasn't discriminating enough :-(

What's your opinion, Rick? Should I uninstall it?

Thank you, Rick. I decided in the meantime to uninstall it though, for
now and wait and see if I need it.
