I have trouble opening files on windows vista. Most recently when i tried to
download firmware from the belkin site for my router. I get the following
message.
"Windows cannot open this file, windows needs to know what program created
it" and provides links to research the problem online. The file name
mentioned in the error message is belkin.bin
I have also got this message before when trying to open picture files. I
dont seem to have this problem on my laptop with windows XP installed
Any ideas?

Downloading, launching, opening, running all have different means.

Before any version of Windows can do something with a file it needs to
understand the file type. It maintains a master list which you can
modify. Once a file type is associated with a application Windows will
launch it and the application, not Windows should be able to use it to
do whatever it's intended purpose is. By default Windows understand
many common files types. Others because of security risks is will warn
you or just ignore.

Go to Control Panel, Default Programs, then access the option that
lists and allows you to change file types and protocols. This is how
you tell Windows to use such and such program or some build-in Windows
applet to respond to a particular file type.

Bin files can be many things, some present a security risk.

You likely will need to determine what particular Belkin program opens
the one you downloaded. Also read this:

Your new Belkin firmware "bin" file needs to be applied from within
your Belkin configuration utility or web interface. Consult your manual for
details.
