Error message

I am getting an error message when I attempt to compact and repair the back
end of a database.
It is, "You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively
by user 'medinaa' on machine '123456'. Try again when the database is
available."

The problem is I am the user working on that machine. I tried a different
user who had admin priveleges on a different macine (after shutting mine
down) and the error message followed the user to that machine. It said, "You
attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user
'Johnson' on machine '7891011'. Try again when the database is available."

Is there a way to deal with lock files that wont go away? When I log off the
lock file remains....like someone is still logged on....but if that was the
case, wouldnt the errror message tell me who that was?

TIA

The ldb lock file shouldn't remain. It should be gone a few seconds after the
last user is off the database. This includes people on the FE as it is
looking into the BE.

If everyone is truly off, this leads me to believe that you have a folder
permissions problem. Make sure that all users have full privileges to the
folder containing the BE.

Also consider using the Microsoft JetComp utility to compact and repair the
database. It does a better job plus forces you to make a backup at the same
time.
