My laptop was working fine when I left earlier today, but when I returned the
screen was black. When I restarted it, it came up with a black screen and
said "A read error has occurred, press Ctrl Alt Delete to restart"
.........And that's what keeps coming up every time I reboot it.....Does
anyone know whats wrong and/or how to fix it. I would GREATLY appreciate it.
It is my laptop for school and I have some things on there I need to get.
THANKS.

Your hard drive has probably failed. If you have other computers,
necessary equipment, and a fairly high level of computer skills you can
diagnose the problem and possibly retrieve the data - or at least find
out for sure if the data is retrievable locally. If you don't have what
is necessary to determine this, take the laptop to a professional
computer repair shop with experience in doing data recovery. This will
not be your local version of BigStoreUSA.

If the hard drive has indeed died, then the only way to get the data off
will be to send the drive to a professional data recovery company like
Drive Savers (my preference) or Seagate Data Recovery. General prices
run from $500USD on up. Drive Savers recovered all the data on a failed
laptop drive for one of my clients and it cost $2,700. He thought it
was worth the money; only you know what your data is worth. I
understand that some insurance companies are now covering data recovery
charges under "Loss of Intellectual Property" so check with yours.

Drive Savers - http://www.drivesavers.com
Seagate Data Recovery Services - https://www.seagatedatarecovery.com/

This is why backing up is important. If you don't know how, then ask the
someone at the computer shop you choose to teach you.

I found out today that after it gives me that message it says operating
system not found. Is that still the same problem?
