My laptop was working fine and I left the room, when I came back the screen
was black. I restarted it, and it came up with a black screen and an error
message:
"A read error has occurred
Press Ctrl Alt Delete to Restart"
Does anyone know what's wrong or how to fix it? PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I need
this computer for my school work. Thank you to anyone who can help!

It is difficult to advise without more information. Did you press Ctrl Alt
Delete, and if so, what happened after that? Did you get the same error
message again or did Windows XP load normally? It goes without saying that
if you don't backup your files then sooner or later you will suffer data
loss and great anguish.

I did press Ctrl Alt Del but the same thing happened. After I let it sit
there for a while, some other things came up and then it said Operating
system not found.

It's hard to be sure with so little information, but it sounds like your
hard drive died.
