Error message with 1 user profile but not others

We have just purchased a new computer with Windows XP and have set up 4 users
on the system. The first user keeps getting the following error message
whenever logging in: -

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the
default profile for the system.
"DETAIL - The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the
registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. "

however all the previous settings seem to have been saved each time he logs
out. Can anyone tell us why this is happening and how we resolve it?

Julia,

It looks like that the profile is corrupted. I suggest log in as administrator
and copy all personal documents in one place (say administrator's My Documents
folder). Personal documents means those created by the user such as word, excel
etc. don't worry about Cookies, desktop, My Music etc unless they are personal
and no created by Microsoft system.

Now delete the user from the system. Then recreate the user again. You might
need to reboot the sytem after deleting the User so that changes can be made to
the Registry.

Effectively, you are recreating the User Profile from scratch. You could use
different name in which case you don't need to delete anything.
