When loading Windows XP Home Edition upgrade operating
system on my computer I encounter a problem when prepairing
Installation begins. I receive the following error message:
setup cannot copy E:\1386\mfc42.dll to
C:\WINDOWS\setup\mfc42.dll.
Also receive this error message error:425FF58h.HELP.

Also ran the Hardware Compatibility Program it is telling
me that almost everything on my computer is not compatible.
I cant believe that. Most of my hardware has been purchased
within a year or less.

Can someone please help.

Dennis Biernott.

2 things:
1) When you say "most" of your hardware, that sounds like
a home-made system. If so, compatibility with future
software may be a crapshoot from the moment of purchase.
2) How old is the hardware? Lots of hardware is available
for sale some time after it's released, which means that
a purchase date of a year ago isn't necessarily
conclusive.

Check with your hardware manufacturer(s) and/or provide a
list of your hardware from Device Manager.

One reason for the incompatible message is that you will need to get XP
drivers for that hardware.
