Operating information:
OS: Win XP sp2
Outlook 2003, using Outlook Connector to synchronise with Hotmail.
Constantly connected to Hotmail server - home user broadband.

Question:
Each time Outlook is opened, the following message appears:
"The data file [email address @ hotmail.com] was not closed correctly. This
file is being checked for problems"

I have tried closing Outlook by File > Exit.
I have tried closing by the corner X

This is really frustrating, as it takes so long time to open Outlook, while
the file checking process continues. Does anyone have a remedy? This is a
recent issue, and Outlook used to work well. I don't believe anything has
changed on the pc that would have caused this error.

Thank you

Try running the inbox repair tool (scanpst.exe) against the .PST file(s) you
have. You can get the drive/path information for the pst file(s) by going
thru the mail applet in the control panel.

ps - after you use the inbox repair tool, don't forget to exclude your pst
files from real-time antivirus scanning.

Hi Neo

Thank you for that instruction. I have run scanpst.exe against Outlook pst,
and 2 errors were found and repaired.

In AVG Anti-Virus and aVast Anti Virus, I have excluded
C:\WINDOWS\outlook.pst from the real-time scanning.

I have shut down and re-started (hard boot) the pc, and opened Outlook with
no problems. In fact, it is much quicker!

Thank you again.

Hi

The problem has come back!! Regarding real-time anti virus scanning, should
I also exclude the .pst files from Adware programs, such as Ad-Aware and
Spyware Doctor?
Thank you

I've never had to do this since adware programs usually don't do real-time
scanning. Since the problem is back, I would try this to rule out a bad
block on the hard drive.

* Reboot into safe mode
* Rename *.PST to *.BAK
* Copy the *.BAK back as *.PST
* Reboot and give it a whirl

If things are funky after this point, then I just cut to the chase and
create a new PST file.
