I am using Windows XP Home with SP-2. I also use the HOSTS file from the
MVP web site.

I went into "My Computer"\Windows\System 32\Drivers\etc to update to a new
Hosts file and noticed that when I right click on most any of the files in
the etc folder I get an error message and Windows Explorer shuts down. I
have not done a lot of checking but the problem seems to be confined to the
etc folder. I get this problem if I use either Windows Explorer or My
Computer to get into the etc folder.

In Event Viewer I get the following Application error:

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
asthisx.dll, version 1.30.0.110, fault address 0x00001522.

asthisx.dll either you have misspelled this or you have scumware or a
virus.

I copied and pasted the error messages directly into my post. I double
checked the spelling in asthisx.dll and the spelling is correct. After I
saw your reply I ran SpyBot Search & Destroy, AdAware, CWShredder and my AV
program(PC Cillin 2004). Nothing showed up at all.

I did check my virus log in the AV program and found that it denied access
to a couple bad things at 2:14PM today. Following is my virus log:

.............................................................................................

Log List

"Time","Scan Type","Source Type","Virus Name","Infected Source","First
Action","Second Action"

"14:14","Real-time Scan","File","DIAL_PWEBREC.A","PWebRecomendada.dll
(C:\Documents and Settings\bob\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\3PQ5NNP0\clickweb[1].cab)","Deny Access",""

"14:14","Real-time Scan","File","---","C:\Documents and Settings\bob\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\3PQ5NNP0\clickweb[1].cab","Deny Access",""

..........................................................................................

I ran Google searches on DIAL_PWEBREC.A, and asthisx.dll and got no results
at all. Hope this stuff means something to you.

I don't know what is going on with my computer. Could something be hiding
in System Restore? I have restore points going back to Jan. 10. I have not
tried a Sys. Restore to try to correct the problem.

I await your comments.

Thank you,

Bob,

Do a Search on you machine for asthisx.dll. When you locate it note what
folder(s) it's in. Right click asthisx.dll | Properties | Version tab |
Look through the info for clues to see if asthisx.dll is a legitimate file,
which I doubt. Post back with location(s) and any other info.

HOW TO: Search For Hidden Or System Files In Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302347

Clean out all of your Temporary Internet files folder before you run Spybot
S & D and all the other programs. A lot of this crap hides there.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

I think I got the problem solved. I did a search and found that asthisx.dll
was part of a program that I installed a couple days ago. It is a program
called Associate This. I uninstalled the program, rebooted, and did a
search for asthisx.dll and it was gone. I followed the instructions in the
MS article to search for hidden & system files.

I found that the Associate This program was a little too involved for me
and intended to delete it anyway.

Thanks for your help.
