error message re: MSVCIRT.dll

all of a sudden I am getting a message when trying to get
into tax cut 2003 or steet maps. the error says:
The application or dll C:\windows\system32.msvcirt.dll is
not a valid windows image.
what do I do?

You might want to confirm that the correct, undamaged version of the file
is on your system...

If you have an XP CD, put it into the drive

Click START|RUN, and type...

sfc /scannow (note the space between the "c" and the "/")

<enter>

This should allow XP to restore damaged files.
If you do not have the CD, or get prompts during this process,
reply here - indicating what you have already tried.
