Whenever I run TCM 2004 and want to watch a match the game freezes and I get
the following error message:-

<Call Stack>
Empty
<Error Msg>
Pool ran out of mem>

I have 2Gb of memory (of which only 470Mb are used for this game) and I have
my pagefile managed by the system (it sets it to 3,070Mb) so I have
difficulty believing that I don't have enough memory.

Can anyone tell me what this windows message means and what I might do to
fix the problem?

Regards,

Stan

What screen resolution and refresh rate are you using?

Jim,

Many thanks for the response.

I am using 1024 x 768 in both windows and the game. My LG Flatron L1810B
LCD monitor can take refresh rates up to 85Hz but I operate with 75 Hz.

Regards,

Stan

That should not be the problem then. I thought you have been
trying something like 1600x1400 at 120 Hz.

The issue is what is the "pool" perhaps ....
Did a Google and found a recent patch to fix crashes is
out...

Jim,

What a star you are. Unfortunately, I applied this updated patch yesterday
and thought that would fix the problem - it didn't :>(

But many thanks for trying.

my pagefile managed by the system (it sets it to 3,070Mb) so I have
difficulty believing that I don't have enough memory.

I think that is a message from the game itself (or rather the compiler
used to produce it), and relates to memory it is managing itself

BTW with that much RAM, setting the regular pagefile's initial size up
there is plain wasteful. There will be hardly any actual traffic on the
file, and I would suggest an initial size of 100 MB (leave Max up for
contingencies) Windows tends to park 20 or 30 MB into the page file,
but beyond that it should not be getting any use unless you have some
extraordinarily heavy usage.

Alex,

Many thanks for your reply.

I have now established that you are correct. EA Sports have confirmed that
the message does come from the game and my own work has revealed that the
game conflicts occur because the bios is set to "enable" for the "Video Bios
Cacheable" option. Turning off this option solves the problem.
Accordingly, the game problem is now solved.

Your second point about the size of my PageFile is very interesting and
shows I need to revise my setup. My PageFile is set this way as a result of
reading (or perhaps mis-reading!) this Microsoft Knowledge Base article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314482. I set mine up to allow the
system to manage each of my three SCSI drives. Are you saying that I should
set each drive with a minimum of 100Mb (so the initial size for all 3 drives
will be 300Mb when the system recommends a minimum of 3,070Mb) and, say, a
Maximum of 2,070 for each drive (a total of 6,210Mb for all 3 drives) or
should I do something different?

Stan

There is no real point in XP in having page files on different drives;
a single one in a suitable place is sufficient. That KB article does
not really relate to XP, and should either be updated or have an
alternative article that *does* reflect how XP works. But see my page
at www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Alex,

Many thanks for drawing may attention to your great web site. I am now in
the process of refining my setup to reflect what I have learned.

Regards,

Stan
