Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade hangs on install

Hi,

i just bought vista upgrade and i have tried several times to upgrade my
Windows XP SP2 to Vista but it hangs at the final stage every time. After
windows reboots and starts vista, i get a blank screen with the "knight
rider" style loading bar with the Microsoft wording under that (there is no
logo on the screen) and it just stays there (left for 2+ hours, with no
movement).
if i run safe mode, it lists a few files and the last file listed is
crcdisk.sys.
ive ensured my vga drivers are the latest available from nvidias website as
that originally flagged as an issue from the upgrade advisor, but that
doesn't make a difference. interestingly when i start to install Vista it
does another compatibility check and that did highlight the nvidia drivers as
a problem. i did pick the option to have windows to check the web for any
patches that may exist as well.
i can see wuite a few threads around the net with what seems like identical
issues, and all cases appear to be related to SATA drives (which i have..i do
not own a regular IDE drive anymore, even my DVD drive is a sata connection).

i ran the upgrade advisor and the only issues reported were:

one thread suggested (though it was probably referring only to laptops) to
rename pcmcia.sys files..i tried that to no avail. one thread suggested to
unplug the monitor during the install..again, this step didn't work in my
case either.

if i boot from the DVD then it takes in excess of five minutes to load the
dvd (hangs after "loading files" on the green backdrop. it eventually gives
the option to try a repair..on clicking that it shows two Windows Vista
options in the drop down, but hangs again for 2-3 minutes (meanwhile the hard
disk light flashes once per second)..if i try a repair, the repair just hangs
too (i gave up after 45min-1h) when i cancel it i get quite a few options..i
can use dos prompt to access C: etc....the windows memory test reports no
problems with the RAM either. my system was built 6mnths ago and has been
working flawlessly on Windows XP SP1/SP2.

has anyone got any advice on this issue. im open to suggestions ;-)

Hey,

I'm having similar problems, using an Asus M2N 1394 MB. Installation hangs
at the green bar, but I can get it to complete in safe mode.
After installation, booting in safe mode presents a window saying it cannot
finish installation in safe mode. I looked on the Vista partition, and all
the files were there! Still, it doesn't boot, not without hanging at the
green bar. I've tried updating the BIOS, tried a flat install, tried updating
drivers and including them on install. Nothing works.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Try updating the BIOS. I had the same issue and tried EVERYTHING to no
avail. Updating the BIOS did it.
