error message "path is too deep"

Hello,
Has anyone an explanation for the error message "Cannot copy ... path is too
deep" when transferring files from one machine to another (distant) using a
mapped disk on the distant machine ?

I guess there are two reasons:

1. The file name (including path) is more than 256 characters.
2. The file name (including path) contains unusual characters unsupported by
the other computer.

Try to use a simpler file name directly under root to see whether the
problem is solved or not.

Martin.

Dear Martin,

Thank you for the suggestion. The nam of the file was indeed quite long.
I'll try next time but eventually the problem was solved by restarting the
computer. Perhaps this is due to a buffer that got filled up from a previous
disk mapping and which was not flushed properly. Does that seem logical to
you ?

Paul

I had this same symptom. Believe it or not, after 2 hours of messing with all
sorts of settings and getting no where, I swapped network cables. This fixed
the problem completely! In fact the old cable works just fine too - all I had
to do was
re-seat the connection. Clearly Microsoft's error message is worse than
useless because it is misleading.

Thank you very much. I guess indeed that reseraing the connection is what I
did by restarting te computer. I agree with you that many messages from
Windows are either unintelligible or even uncorrect. This is probably the
case here. I actually noticed many more "non-understandable" connection
problems with Win98 (all solved by also restarting the computer). I
therefore guess this has to do with the way the OS ineteracts with TCP/IP
(and the corresponding socket). But since MS-OS is not open code, no one can
really tell what is happening...
Have a nice 2005 year with a lot of successful connections !
Paul.
