When i start my PC it has started coming up with an error message

acstart16.exe - application error
The application failed to initialise properly (0xc00000005). Click on OK to
terminate the application.

What is it?
What do i do about it?

Perhaps coicidentally one folder on an external disk drive now has a square
at the end of its name and claims to be locked/empty/or not there.

Help please

This sounds like a virus or malware. Do a full virus scan,
and rename acstart16.exe to acstart.bad.
