Error message file misising or corrupt /windows\system32\config\sy

when I start the recovery process for this error in Windows XP and I type in
"md tmp", it tells me "access denied". I can't go any further to fix the
above problem. Why is this happening? Thanks for your help. Lorraine

Alternately, that the folder creation is being attempted in an area outside
of the Recovery Console's scope. It is by default limited. The scope can
be expanded, but it may be too late to do that just now.

In a worst-case, it's simple to adapt the directions at the KB article
you've identified to other drive-access methods, most of which are *much*
friendlier than the recovery console. Attaching the drive to another
system as a slave, perhaps via an external USB2 case or adapter, or with a
Linux boot CD, are two examples.

Won't your suggestion help retrieve data rather than enable the system
hive to be replaced? Alternatively are you saying you can replace the
existing system hive with a backup copy using your approch? I can see
that the system hive will not be in use.
