Error message, "DX8 Required"

Thanks to the update last week that was auto-offered, and
accepted, I receive an error message, "DX8 Required" when
any PC game is launched. Of course, they never launch past
this point.

A recommendation to upgrade to DirectX9 had no effect. Any
help is appreciated.

Have you tried running Dxdiag, the Directx testing/reporting tool?
It may not appear in program groupings but should be located in the
\system32 folder
