Error message 0x800106ba

Hi All,

I've been trying to recover from a "a.exe"/"msa.exe" virus and believe I
have all the extra files removed. But, when I try to run defender, which has
been running on this computer for years, I have the above error message.

Defender installs, and successfully loads the updated definition file, and
begins scanning. About 2-3 minutes into the scan, it fails with the above
error and terminates. I've looked up MS help for the error, which says first
to uninstall, then when that doesn't work, uninstall and use the install
cleanup, and when that doesn't work, re-register a bunch of DLLs using
regsvr32. *That doesn't work either!*

After a failure, attempts to restart the service result in error 5: Access
Denied".

Any thoughts??

Thanks
