Error log opening file

Hi
I have an Excel file that I use regularly. Today I was unable to open it. A
message appeared " Excel.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

As far as I am aware I haven't done anything strange to this file to cause
this to happen. I have tried re-booting computer with no success.

Also, the word [Group] in square brackets appears after the filename when I
try to open it.

I have emailed it to a friend who has been able to open it on her computer.

Any ideas, please?

Thanks

The [Group] means that two or more sheets are selected at the same time.
Anything you do to the sheets that are selected is mirrored on all of them.
You select them by using Ctrl or Shift while clicking another tab (Ctrl
selects non-contiguous, Shift selects contiguous). To deselect select a
non-selected tab or right-click a selected one and select un-group

I doubt this is your problem and the reason a friend can open can be for any
reason, but certainly could be any/all of the following

1) Later version XP and 2003 are far better at opening corrupt files
2) Corrupt *.xlb file (Try deleting this file, Excel will create a new one
but you toolbar customisations will be gone.
3) Corrupt personal.xls file. (Try moving from your xlStart folder and see
if it helps)
4) Faulting add-in, try going to Tools>Add ins... and de-select all, then
add one back at a time and re-start Excel between
5) Think if you have loaded ANY software, etc in the last few days
6) Back up what you have as if the workbook is corrupt it will likely get
worse

Hi Nick
Thanks for your help. I now understand what [group] means.
I am still not able to open the file, but have manged to get round it by
emailing it to another computer, opening it, cutting and pasting each
worksheet (10) to a separate file, emailing them back and re consolidating
them.....Took a while, but at least it works . Taken lots of backups also,
something I tend to overlook.

Thanks again
