error joining domain - conflicting credentials

When I try to join a Windows 2000 Pro pc to a Win2000
domain, I get the following error:
"Credential conflict with an existing set of credentials".
I am logged on as Administrator and use the Administrator
account when I attempt to join the domain.

If the machine name already exists in the domain, this error will
result. For example, you call your computer Ruth-Gordon, then get a new
computer, and try to create the name of Ruth-Gordon, even though your
old machine has been taken offline.
