I am building a computer for my daughter and im attempting to install a ethernet adapter. When I boot up the compter, it detects the adapter but when it tries install it I get the following error. " THere was a problem installing this device. Ethernet controller. An error occured during the installation of this device. The data is invalid. Trying to update the driver yields the same results.
I am running Win XP home. I have tried 2 different adapters in this computer with the same results but they work in another computer that I have. I have servicepac 1 a installed that came with the XP disk but nothing else.
The MOBO is a gigabyte GA7DXR+
1.6 AMD ATHLON

Thanks

Try this.

Go to Start, Run... and type "regedit"
without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI

and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are
strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these
folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder
and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to
install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select
'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and
then continue with the installation of your device.

Thanks John, That did the trick.
