When trying to make a backup of my registry I keep getting an error message
saying "There may be a disk or file system error". I've checked disk integrity
and registry integrity with Norton Utilities but can find nothing wrong. I've
also tried making a backup in safe mode with the same result. Any ideas what may
be the cause and how I can fix it?

Well the most obvious question is what program are you using to make a
backup of the registry? The program used has to be designed for it an
make specific API calls because the registry files are open for
read/write access.

How are you trying to back it up? Most programs that simply try to copy
the files will fail. And the idea of using regedit to 'export' the
whole thing is a flawed method.

The registry is backed up anyway as part of the daily System Restore
point. If you want an auxiliary backup I suggest ERUNT - from

I've tried to backup using the export function of RegEdit. I've also tried it
using the BackUp Registry funtion of Tweak XP Pro (but I believe this is merely
a shortcut to RegEdit export).

This worked fine until some time ago, when this error message kept coming up. I
was afraid there might be something wrong with the registry, but have been
unable to figure out what it is. Is there any way to make sure that the registry
isn't somehow corrupted?

I didn't realize that the export function of RegEdit is useless, and have
followed your advice and downloaded ERUNT and made a backup. However, I'm still
concerned that the registry is corrupted; why would I get this error message in
RegEdit if it isn't? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The export function in Regedit should work although it is not a useful
backup of the registry. Is the complete error that you get "There may be
a disk or file system error"? We know that there is not serious damage
to the registry. Windows XP with SP1 does a registry check at bootup and
can fix registry issues. Also Regedit does a registry check when you
open a registry. We use Regedit in Windows XP to repair corrupt
registries from Windows 2000. Therefore the error could mean that some
keys have lost security info or there is some program that is preventing
export of the registry (I don't think this is very likely).
