I keep having this msg in windows media player. And i cannot hear any system sounds when i turn the speakers on. What should i do?

C00D11BA: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

See the post below for the answer to the first part.
Make sure your volume control sliders are up to max and that nothing in
playback is muted. (Double click on the loudspeaker icon in the systray).
Check your loudspeaker cables are plugged in correctly.
