after i connect to the internet i get the
message "svchost.exe generated errors and will be closed
by windows" and i can't disconnect unless i plug out my
modem. furthermore, certain links won't open properly- not
even windows update. i followed some instructions from
microsoft's site, but the problem still persists. i hope
you can help me. thanks.

You probably have a virus infection and need to run a full virus scan on your
computer with the latest virus definitions. You may also have spyware/malware
problems and your symptoms indicate that your hosts file may have been modified to
deny access to certain websites. usually Microsoft Update, search engines, and
security/protection websites. You can view your hosts file by searching for it or go
to \winnt\system32\drivers\etc. You can open is with notepad and cut out improper
entries and save it. It may be worth a try to boot into safe mode with networking to

I think you are infected with "w32.explet.a@mm" virus. Search
www.symantec.com for the explanation and symptoms of this virus. I beleive
this virus causes the same symptoms which you are describing.
