Error: \device\harddisk1\D during a paging operation

I am hoping someone can help me out. Whenever I connect my USB external
hard drive to XP Pro (SP1) I get the following error: " An error was
detected on \device\harddisk1\D during a paging operation" .
The hard drive is a Maxtor 80gb. The type of enclosure I'm using has an
external power supply. Any ideas?

Yep. There is an error in the drive's file structure. Possibly, if you
have enabled disk caching on the drive, when last unconnected you failed
to use the Safely Remove Hardware system tray applet to flush the disk
cache prior to removal. I also, with my removables, never leave them
connected at shutdown due to this same problem.

If you can mount the drive, run chkdsk d: /r from a command prompt to
repair the file structure. This presumes that this drive is in fact d:.
