Hi all,

I tried to run an error-checking on my C:-drive today and after the reboot
of my pc, it told me:

Can not open volume for direct access

and instead of starting with the error-check it proceeded with starting my
windows.
Any advice how I can run my error-checking again, is highly appreciated.

I do have Windows XP, Home edition, SP2 and I recently re-installed my
Windows on my PC.
This process was successfully as far as I can tell, only difference was that
in this case I had a c-drive = 60GB and prior to reinstall the 60 GB was
divided over the C-drive and D-drive, both had 30GB.

Thanks,
Ellen

Thanks, but which service should I disable?? My Anti-virus if I am
correct... So I will disable Panda
Since CHKDSK is not one of them...

I also read that Zone-alarm can cause this problem, but I do not have that
and I am up-to-date with my Windows Update aswell.

Thanks,
Ellen

Ellen,

I do not know first hand of any program that causes chkdsk to not run
correctly.

If you're going to disable your AV, make sure that you pull the plug on your
modem so nasties cannot get in while you are unprotected.

An old version of ZoneAlarm did cause problems, but they fixed ZA a long
time ago. I deleted any references that I had because it was fixed.

The problem you are reporting is one from the past i.e.
pre SP2. You said you reinstalled Windows XP. I would
suggest you check your update History.

Try Start, Help and Support, Keep your computer up-to-date with
Windows Update.

There is an option to look a History of Updates installed there.

Hi Wes,

I solved the problem in the mean-time. I have uninstalled a program named
Hitmanpro. Thsi program calls a number of Anti-spyware programs, like
Spybot, Spydoctor, etc.. and submits them for you in a row. The reason I
wanted to run CHKDSK was because this proram caused me a serious error
yesterday (blue screen with a fatal arror on a driver ~Worried look~).

After the uninstall, CHKDSK worked normally again.

I have contacted the programmer in the mean-time, so I am curious what his
reply will be.

Thanks,
Ellen

Thanks Gerry, but my computer is up-to-date.
My compture is just a few months old, and the Windows version is already
SP2. First thing I always do after a re-install is make sure I have all
updates.

Thanks,
Ellen

Did you have a Dutch version of Hitman pro, Ellen? LOL

Glad you got it worked out.

I use everything below except Ad-Aware, I just never liked it. <shrug>

Download, install, run, update and run again. They are all
good, FREE utilities. Make sure you update every program, even if you
just downloaded it. You must have the latest updates. Without updates,
you have a gun without ammo. You also need to use more than one
anti-scumware program. One program will *not* catch everything.

1) SpywareBlaster
