error after removing slave HD, XP boot manager

M

Mike S.

Hello all,

I'll first begin by outlining my disk/partion set up:

disk0: 80 GB: 3 partitons:

partion 1: (C:) windows 98 SE (primary)
partion 2: (D:) Data/Programs (extended/logical)
partion 3: (F:) windows XP Pro (primary)

disk1: 13 GB: 1 partition

partion 1: (E:) Data (extended/logical)

I first set up my pc creating the 3 partions on disk 0 and
1 partion on disk1, using partion magic. Then I installed
win98 SE. I then made it dual boot by installing win XP
pro (anticipating that the 2nd partion would be used as
a "common" data partion for the two operating systems. Win
XP pro is nice in that it does all the dual boot setup
without too much hassle and it recognizes that you already
have win 98 SE installed. Voila my sytsem was now dual
boot with the configuration I outlined above. (please note
that I do not remember as to why the winxp pro install
automatically assigned itself a drive letter F: and called
the partion on the 2nd hard drive E: , as I did this some
time ago, but in any case, that is the result)

Ok now for the problem. I now want to use the 13 GB HD in
a 2nd pc and so therefore would like to remove it. The
first thing I did was went into XP pro and under disk
management I deleted the E: partion (on disk1) and made
the entire disk unformatted. WinXP had no problem with
this and when I rebooted, everything was fine. Now,
however, when I remove the 2nd (13 GB) harddrive I get
some sort of error that prompts me for a boot disk. Its
obvious that the 2nd HD was some kind of a place holder
because when I put the 2nd HD back in, everything works
fine. So my question is: how do I make the removal of the
2nd hardrive transparent to my dual boot win98se/winXP pro
configuration?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Sounds like either boot.ini is confused, or your boot files were on E.

Locate boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect.com. If they are on "E", then you are
going to need to rebuild the boot files. Boot the WinXP CD, run the recovery
console and run "bootcfg /rebuild" from the command prompt.

Thank you for the quick reply!

I just did a search for the files you suggested. The only
one I could find was boot.ini and it was located on the
F: partion (the XP pro) as one would expect, since XP is
my boot handler.

The thing is: is that so long as the 2nd HD remains
connected as a slave, I can boot up fine with no
problems, however as soon as I remove the slave IDE cable
that goes into that drive, the XP boot handler gets
confused. Its almost like that slave drive is a "place
holder" in my partion table, even though I stripped it of
its "E:" designation in:

Win XP Pro ---> control panel
-----> performance/maintenance ---> Admin Tools --->
computer management ---> disk management.

Its now just an unformatted drive and what I need to do
is to get XP to forget its there, so I can remove it and
put it to better use. The question is how.

Not necessarly, as the boot files do not have to be on the same partition as
the system folders. The boot files will install to the root of the boot
partition. You may need to enable folder options/view tab to see hidden and
system files in order to see them, but there will definitely be someplace on
the system. Before you proceed any further, you need to know where these
files are. The exact error message you receive may help. I suspect your
problem stems from the way you originally partitioned with PM., but I
haven't used PM in many years (last version I used was 5).

Mike S.

well I'm ashamed to admit that I found out what the
problem was.... its rather trivial. The problem came from
the fact that my master HD, which I recently aquired (WD
80 GB, 8 MB cache) has a 10 pin jumper configuration.
Which means that removing the slave requires that you set
the jumpers on the master from a "master with slave"
config. to a "just master" configuration. Ok I feel like a
complete moron now, but I guess its all part of learning
this stuff. In my defense I will say that all the HD's I
have dealt until now have only the 6 pin jumper setup,
which is why I completely overlooked this.

Once again Rick I appreciate the speedy replies. Take
care.
