Error adding PCs to domain

Hi,
I had 3 PCs in one domain, and moved them to another domain. I did NOT put
them in a workgroup first, I just changed the domain name and it let me join
them to the new domain. These are Win2k pro workstations. Well...now the
workstations are acting funny. When I try and add users I can browse to the
domain from the add users box, but when I click on a users to select I get a
strange error message that says the domain cannot be found. I am logged onto
the workstation as a domain admin and logged into the domain, not the local
pc. When I try and add a network printer and search the domain it comes up
with no printers. However, If I add a local user and give the user name and
domain it lets me add the user. I tried removing the PCs from the domain
into a workgroup and back into the domain again, but it still acts the same
way. I even deleted the computer accounts after removing them. I tried the
above actions on a PC that is already in the domain and it works fine. What
the heck did I do to these PCs and how can I recover them?
Thanks - wayne

Have you looked at where you are now pointing to for dns?
This sounds like a dns issue.

Almost certainly a DNS issue. Ensure that the clients are pointing to the
correct DNS server. Use nslookup or a similar tool to confirm. Also check
the DNS server the ensure you have the correct records.

Well...How could I join the PC to the domain and log in as a domain user if
DNS is messed up?

Can you post the results of an NSLOOKUP to your name server so we can see if
it's properly resolving lookups?

Wayne,

A really quick way to solve this would be to change one of the workstations
to a workgroup, reboot, log on as local Administrator and then join that
computer to the new domain. Then log on with a Domain user account object.
I bet that all of the problems go away.

I do not think that I have ever joined a computer account object to a 'new'
domain without first joining it to a workgroup and then joining it to the
new domain. Not saying that this can not be done....just never tried it.

Also, just for a piece of information - if you install the Support Tools
from the Service Pack CD-Media ( and not from the WIN2000 Server
CD-Media....that one is old and outdated ) you can use netdom to join
computers to a domain.

Well...I checked theIP config and the PC's had hard DNS entries. Once I
pointed them to the correct server everything was fine. What through me off
was that I was able to move them to the other domain in the first place, then
log in as the admin.
Thanks - Wayne
