I got this strange error today when installing last nights automatic
updates. A check of the help files tells me what to do if I get this error
WHILE trying to check for updates but this is not the case as Windows Update
checks for updates fine but just won't install them. Anyone have any ideas?

There are two other threads on this subject.

Just go here:
<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en>
and download the update manually then go back to MS Update and search
for more updates, you should find another security update to install.

Thank you. I should have just done that in the first place. I do wish
Microsoft would make it easier to find the manual download instead of making
you search for it by clicking 2 different links but at least they do make it
available and this did exactly as you said it did. It also got rid of the
"hidden" update for 1.1 SP1 after the manual install.

thanks from me too as I had the same problem.....don't know whether it's
connected to the reason for the patch fix or problems with the update
but my Windows Live Mail has lost its contact list.

I just checked and all mine are still there. Did you also loose the web
copy of your contacts? There should also be a copy on your Windows Live
Site if you have a Windows Live account.
