I recently started receiving the following error message when surfing
the Internet:
Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)...
Error 678: The remote computer did not respond. For further assistance,
click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number.
Up until this morning, I had been assigning an IP address to the machine
in question. This morning the message started appearing more
frequently, so I switched the settings so the LAN Card would obtain the
IP address automatically. The error went away and I haven't seen it
again. I access the computer remotely and have my DSL modem and router
configured to forward to the appropriate ports to the affected machine.
There is more than one machine on my home network, so having it obtain
the IP address automatically is problematic.
Here is the configuration that I was using when I was receiving the error:
DSL Modem IP: 192.168.0.1
Router IP: 192.168.1.100
IP address: 192.168.1.101
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 162.168.1.100
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.100
I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 and all of these connections are LAN
connections. The machine in question is not connecting via wireless.
Again, it seemed this configuration had been working until recently.
Does anyone have any ideas?
