Error 678 Remote Server could not be connected

I am trying to change from a Dial-Up connection to an ADSL broadband
connection to my
I S P under XP without SP1 or SP2. Even though the Huawei Modem/Router
installed by the Service Provider shows a steady connection and Ping queries
correctly detect the gateway, the I P Server and the D N S Servers, when I
try both the static and the dyanmic methods of connection, I get error
message 678 with the static method and not response from the Server with the
dynamic method.
I have seen some messages on this topic through Google Search on some
Microsoft Newsgroups but I do not see any suggestions on how to troubleshoot
the problem and resolve it. Are there any articles on MS Knowledge Base on
this frequently observed problem? Or does anyone have suggestions on how to
solve the problem?
Thanks.
