After recently upgrading from ME to XP, I tried to
install Norton Personal Firewall 2004 to my newly
upgraded XP operating system and received Error 1606.
Could not Access Network Location <Common Administrative
Tools>.All Users\. Your Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 315352 says that this can happen with you
upgrade from Win 98 SE or ME to XP. The problem is an
incorrect setting in the registry entry and I went about
doing exactly what it said to do, since I am not well
versed in the Registry and its editing. However, there
was no entry for Common Administrative Tools, under User
Shell Folders!
I searched the internet and found JSI FAQ 4819 describing
the same error 1606 with info on what should be in the
above missing entry and added it to the Registry. But,
when I again tried to install NPF (Norton Personal
Firewall) 2004 the same error 1606 appeared and the
install failed.
Is there a simple, elegant solution like a script or
executable that I can use to correct the registry entry
for the "Common Administrative Tools" under User Shell
Folders and Shell Folders to get them correct so that I
can proceed with my aborted installation of NPF 2004?
