Error 1324 after XP SP2 Fresh Install

I just reinstalled XP and upgraded to SP2 immediately. The
inspiration for this was adding an external hard drive (Western
Digital 120gig) to my Presario 715US. I'm using a USB2.0 card to
attach the external drive.

Since I added the new drive and rebuilt XP SP2, I have had a problem
with Windows Installer. Most of the software I have that uses the
installer fails with one of two things - an Error 1324 - invalid
character in the folder name (or path to the folder?) or package could
not be opened error. I htink that is a result of the 1324 error, as
some of the programs have a reference to 1324 in the log when they
fail.

I even moved the msi file for Diskeeper Light to the root directory.
thinking that nothing can be wrong with C: or D:. Well, I still got
the error. I suspect I'm not looking at the right path.

Does anyone have any ideas on this one?

Thanks!

What if you do the XP / SP2 install without the USB2.0 card? Do you
still get the problems?
