An idea went through my mind this morning, I have seen virus programs that
do not allow the installation of an anti-virus product or the updating of an
existing anti-virus product. Could it be a piece of spyware that is
preventing the installation?

Well--some sort of interference is one reason behind suggesting trying an
install running in diagnostic startup mode set via MSCONFIG. So far, I
haven't seen such indications, although I have to say that the Windows
Installer seems to be sensitive enough that it wouldn't take much effort on
the part of a virus or trojan writer to knock it out.

Is this not an added reason to allow the product to be installed in Safe
Mode?

I've reason to believe that some facility which will meet this need (the
need to be able to install and scan in a mode protected from running malware
on the system) is being looked at very carefully.
