Error 0xC0000005 in quartz.dll

My system suddenly developed a problem in that some MPGs cause the
Windows Media Player to launch, display a black screen then crash. I
tried to run one of these through TMPGenc to see if it could convert
it to a more usable state but since it uses the same codecs as WMP it
died too.

This time though I allowed the Visual Studio debugger to look into the
situaiton. It reported an access violation 0xC0000005 in quartz.dll.
Since this is shipped with Win2K I won't be able to uninstall it and
get a different vendor's codec. Or can I? Since I'll probably have
no luck getting a bug fix from Microsoft anytime soon, has anybody
else seen this and found a workaround?

Anxiously,
Mike Golobay

Quartz isn't necessarily the codec, especially if you've installed 3rd party
MPEG or MPEG2 software.
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#alwaysdownload
points to how you can figure out what's actually being used to render the
content, IIRC.

Gspot says its the MPEG1 codec in quartz.

A Google search gave me some articles referencing the same problem in
several different scenarios. The only suggested solution I've found
so far is to upgrade the video drivers. I tried to do this for my
system but Compaq (HP nowadays) is so lame they offer a download for
my specific model PC that doesn't actually work on my PC.

More on this as it develops....
