Set up your gmail account according to all the settings provided by them,
especially the port numbers!!
The links describe setup for Outlook Express, Windows mail setup is exactly
the same.
Check your settings as per:

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Make sure you follow their setup instructions for Windows Mail:

If you still receive the same error message, which antivirus are you running?
That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. As a minimum, email scanning in the
antivirus must be turned off, although that may not be sufficient to eliminate
all bad effects. For more information on why email scanning is bad, see
