Erratic Mouse

I have had mouse problems in Win98 and it continues in WinXP - At various and random times, my hard drive runs for a second and the mouse cursor opens the Start menu. If I move the mouse, it jumps around the edges of the screen and randomly opens/actuates random programs or files or functions. If I hold it still for several seconds, I hear another hard drive click, and the erratic actions stop. This occurs during any and all programs and net activities. It even highlights desktop items and asks if I want to delete! Then I don't dare move the mouse lest it deletes something. I have the latest virus software with updates downloaded automatically. The mouse is a "Space Walker" brand (?) and I have no support software for it. My machine says it's a PS2 mouse and uses the default support software. Any ideas?

.....try going to the web site for the manufacturer and downloading the
appropriate software/drivers etc. I've not heard of the brand you mention,
for what it's worth.

HTH, if it was previously working without problem then its probably got not
nothing to do with the Software drivers. I have seen this sort of thing
before several times, once it was power supply starting to fail and another
time it was the mouse electronics failing. Mice are so cheap these days its
worth purchasing a second mouse just to ensure that its not the original
mouse that is faulty.
