How do I completely erase the history in IE6?
Every time I try to do this:
Tools>internet options>delete cookies, files (offline content), clear
history
I then click ok, but if I try the history again, it still shows my offline
history.
And after doing this 2 or 3 times it shows it as gone, but later I try the
history again, and there's the stuff I thought I deleted before.
Thanks for any help.

Anything listed in Favorites (which by default includes pages saved for
offline viewing) are not deleted when your Clear History, Marc.

Hi Marc :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Deleting History and Typed URLs in Internet Explorer
http://www.wbaudisch.de/DeletingHistory.htm

Your History folder may be corrupted, you can delete it a new one will be
created when you reboot.

To create a new History Folder
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm (XP systems)

To delete the History folder and Index.dat (XP)
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder and reboot.
(or log on as another user that has Administrator privileges)
Example: "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

or.....

If it is only the addresses in the dropdown list you have problems with:

Delete all Addresses in Dropdown box

Courtesy of Jim Byrd -

To delete ALL Addresses in the Drop Down list, go here and
download and install Mike Burgess' DelTypedURL.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

See below for Selective Delete

You can also get DelSearchMRU.inf at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelSearchMRU.inf

Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete. To remove
hidden AutoComplete entries in History:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm#AutoComplete

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure that ALL instances of IE6 are CLOSED before
you do the install of this (these) .inf files. Otherwise the "old" entries
will just be re-written back to the Registry when you close IE.

A nice alternative just for selective or all Address (not Search) history
maintenance is EditURLs, here:
http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/
Here also, you must close ALL instances of IE6 for the deletions to "take".

Recommended

also....if the above fail...

CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
or
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144-10315544.html
History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder in Windows 9x,2K, XP.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

You can NOT delete the History folder. It is a Windows System folder and
Windows will not let you delete it.

Yes, you CAN delete the History folder. You just have to do it from another
user account with admin. privileges (XP/2K/NT) or via DOS (Win9x/ME).
Information on doing this is provided in the links Jan mentions.
