Equiv. of msconfig in win2k?

D

In win98 I was accustomed to disabling some startup programs in msconfig,
since the programs themselves often don't allow you to disable their "memory
resident" (if that's the correct term) functions. I see that msconfig no
longer exists in win2k, so I'm hoping that there is some other way to
disable these programs.

In a related question, I'm noticing that, after my upgrade, my internet
connection (56k modem) is UPLOADING 2 to 5 times more data than it is
downloading (!!!) This has me more than a bit worried - is there some weird
win2k-specific virus uploading the contents of my computer to some remote
site? Or is there simply some program running in the background stuck in
some loop while trying to update itself over the internet?

Any tips appreciated!

Thanks,
Doug

Oops - I see that this question has already been thoroughly answered on this
NG. My second question still remains unanswered though. Any guesses anyone?

Thanks Steve. I installed msconfig and found a program called teekids
running in the background. Hmmm, where did I hear that name before... yep,
it was the Blaster worm. Apparently wasn't able to run in win98, but as soon
as I installed win2k it was off and running. Ran a removal program and seem
to be OK now. I'll install that firewall program anyway...

I guess that means that I've now sent out several billion infected
emails.... :-(

Yes, I confess I was using an old virus list. A new demo of McAfee found
several more viruses, in fact. I also see in the Kerio firewall that my
computer is being relentlessly hammered by attempts to gain access of some
sort. It's a jungle out there! I see now why win xp has a built-in
firewall...

don't get too comfortable at the thought of the firewall in XP its not
full featured .... I leave it switched off and use Kerio instead
