equation editor on toolbar not working

I am able to Insert-> Object-> Equation 3.0 in my document just fine, so I
know it is installed.

As a Math teacher, I do it often enough to appreciate a toolbar button.

However when I add the Equation icon to my toobars (either Standard or
Formatting) nothing happens when I select the button

Any ideas on what's goning on here?

I'm not sure that there are too many ways, but I did it by

Open Tools | Customize. On the Commands tab, choose the Insert category
and scroll the Commands list to Equation Editor. Drag this to your toolbar.

After some investigation, seems that some other software installed an
"improved" equation editor, which hosed all manner of things up from which
I've mostly extracted myself.

That's the only way I knew of to do it, too. The current version is
Microsoft Equation 3.0 (unless you're using the Word 2007 Beta); had you
been using an earlier version?
