equation does not display properly

I'm trying to type an inline equation. I finally figured out how to get it
to display inline (had to change the Paragraph setting), but now after I type
the equation (just a text variable, no fancy symbols) when I go back to Word
the equation is displayed as a blank box with a black border. I also can't
seem to resize the box even though it shows handles when I click on it. My
Styles are set correctly within Equation Editor, so that's not the problem.
Anyone know what's going on? I've been using EE in Word for years and never
had this problem. Thanks.

I figured out the problem on my own; it turns out that I had activated the
"picture placeholders" checkbox in Options. The blank box was evidently a
placeholder.
