Epson "Status Monitor" Grayed Out (Greyed Out)

I have an Epson Stylus C64 running on Windows ME. I am out of at least
one of the 4 inks (black, yellow, magenta, cyan) and would like to use
the Status Monitor in Maintenance to see which one is out.
Unfortunately some genius at Epson decided to make it so that this
function is grayed out under certain circumstamce such as mine. Is
there some way I can make this function work? I did not get any help
from their technical support page. I also tried reinstalling the
printer driver to no effect.

Many thanks in advance,
Peter.

PS I downloaed and installed the Epson driver epson10882 which is
supposed to have the driver for the status monitor but it did not fix
the problem, even after restarting the PC.

PPS. I also tried to go into "Speed & Progress":"Monitoring Preference"
but got the message
""Please make sure the status monitor 3 is installed correctly"

Of course, it did not say how I was supposed to do this. Is it
supposed to be obvious?

Firstly I saw an update to the ME drivers on the Epson web site, have you tried
that? It is at
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...=36478880&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows
and called Printer Driver Updater v 1.0aA
Secondly you could download the utility from http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml
this does many things but has a built in ink level monitor.
