Epson Precision 4180 Heads Up

Having just traded up from an hp, I was very surprised to learn that the
fluorescent tube in the 4180 remains on 24/7.

Epson tech support advises this (and perhaps most other Epson scanners) is
designed to be turned off when not intended for use.

I foresee early tube failures here.

What scan driver/software are you using?

I don't have the same experience. At least in Windows 98 (I think
Win2000, too) the tube does shut off. In fact, I get a "scanner
warming up" message if I wait too long between scans. This is Epson
Scan v2.50a

The scanner will go into a power-save mode after approximately 15
minutes, at which point the light will switch off.
