Epson Perfection 1250 - how good? how crap?

How good or bad is my Perfection 1250 scanner compared to current
budget scanners?

This is the background ... I have never had a scanner before.
Recently I was given an old Epson Perfection 1250 Photo (model
G820A). I believe it was launched in late 2001 for about $120.

It may seem a basic scanner to you veterans but for now it works well
for me although it does seem desperately slow. I scan mainly text
documents and some images.

My QUESTION is ... how good or bad is this scanner compared to
current budget scanners?

For now I am relatively pleased with it but I suspect I will need a
better (faster) scanner someday soon. Very approximately, how much
might a scanner cost from the next level up?

How fast is fast enough?
Epson scanners of that generation were pretty fast and pretty good quality:
I still use mine.
You can try flatbed scanners at many stores to find one in your price range
that works fast enough for you.

For what you are scanning it is about as good as it gets. If you were
scanning 35mm film, or even 120 for anything more than 10x8" prints then
you will probably find the resolution inadequate, but a flatbed isn't
really the best solution for film anyway, so you shouldn't be too
concerned about limitations in that area.

For now I am relatively pleased with it but I suspect I will need a
better (faster) scanner someday soon. Very approximately, how much
might a scanner cost from the next level up?

The next scanner up from that ought to be a dedicated film scanner -
there is little point in getting another flatbed - anything from $500
and up.

I recently changed my Epson 1250 for a 2480. The gain was in speed and
much better transperncy support. It was the speed I wa safter.
Everything else is pretty much the same. If anything the software
interface is a step backwards because you can no longer save named
settings.

I use/have a 1250.

Works fast. The color is great.

But when I do a scan that uses all the glass
there is a one inch rainbow of straight lines
that goes across the bottom of the page.

Most scans don't use all the glass so it's not
a big problem.

Wait for a sale and/or a rebate and get a 4180 for not much more than a
2480. It is better and more substantial.

I have an Epson Perfection 1260 and it works great. The only thing is
it takes a while to scan, but the scans are great and the OCR works
very well.
