Epson CX6600 low ink problems

Hi, all

Newbie question. I've got an Epson CX6600 printer. Whenever an ink
cartridge gets below 10%, the print quality for photos lowers
dramatically. So I'd like to be able to remove that particular print
cartridge, and put in a new one.

But, the printer won't let me do it. The only way is for the cartridge
to run completely out of ink. Then the printer gives me the little
instructions for pushing the color button to move the printer
cartridges out where I can get at them.

I can't believe there is no way to get the cartridges holder to "move
out" whenever you want it to, but I sure can't figure out how to do it.

Amy jelp appreciated.

Epson instructions for first assembly and testing of
the printer include instructions to get access to the
cartridge holders (shipped empty) -- or at least those
for the the CX4400 and 5400 so include. You should
be able to repeat these steps.

If you cannot find the instructions in the user manual you can do it this way.
Power off the printer, power it back on.
Wait for the head to start to move and immediately pull the power cord from the
wall (or printer).
Open the top and you should be able to manually move the head to the correct
position for cartridge removal. If the head does not move easily then try the
procedure again until the head moves freely. No force is required.
When you have replaced the cartridge move the head back to the park position
and plug the power cord back in and power up, there may be some strange noises
but no harm will be done.

I am not directly familiar with the CX6600 model, but Epson printers
generally allow you to replace any cartridge anytime by using a sequence
of front panel key presses. Usually, this is documented in the user
manual under "removal of an outdated cartridge".

Take a look in your manual for a section similar to that.

The process you describe may cause the ink counters in the printer to
get confused, and write a new cartridge down as the almost empty one
being removed, so be careful. It may also introduce air into the heads
which may not get purged on startup.

I'm just not sure how the printer will respond to having the cartridges
replaced while it is off.
